Since making its debut to the streaming service landscape, Netflix has remained a powerhouse and is now giving other streaming services a run for their money. And guess what, the company didn’t just spring from the blue, oh yes, Netflix has gone through series of rebranding to be where it is today.

Although Netflix’s started as a disc-mailing service, the company has now become the front-runner of streaming video-on-demand services, and that’s all thanks to its robust core catalog as well as featuring some of the most interesting original programmings.

However, with other top streaming services now available at a lower price, its easy to see that Netflix plans are pricey. That said, Netflix still remains a pretty reliable option for people looking for quality video streaming services they can rely on to deliver a pleasant experience.

Let’s get into the Netflix Review!

What you get from Netflix catalog

Netflix boasts of having an extensive catalog of video content that is updated from time to time. Meaning you’ll never run out of videos to watch. From anime to adventure to romance to comedy and more, Netflix contents cut across all genres. So depending on what genre you like, Netflix has you covered as they have exciting programs lined for your streaming pleasure.

While Netflix houses some of the best shows in the streaming world, they will lose some of its most-watched shows to other streaming platforms in the future. Shows like The Office will debut on NBC’s Peacock while Friends will move to HBO. And as you may have already noticed, most Marvel movies have now moved to Disney+.

Giving this development, Netflix will now have to rely heavily on producing original content. And considering the success of their original shows and movies so far, we doubt you’ll miss much.

One thing we love about Netflix is that their TV shows are season complete; this is where other streaming services are playing catchup. With the likes of Hulu, you only get to stream the most recent episodes of a handful of shows. Meaning, users will find it challenging to catch up with their favorite shows if they fall far behind.

Although Netflix only adds a couple of shows a season at a time, they are more current with their listing than Hulu. With Hulu, you may have to wait a day or two to start streaming your favorite shows, even though the same shows were already available on Netflix.

Netflix has solidified its place at the top in the streaming world, and that’s not surprising, giving the fact that a number of its original productions have become pop-culture sensations. Here, take a look at some of their finest originals, we are sure you must have watched some of them;

  • Bojack Horseman
  • Black Mirror
  • Dead to Me
  • Orange Is the New Black
  • Stranger Things
  • Peaky Blinders
  • Russian Dolls
  • Locke and Key
  • Disenchantment
  • The Witcher
  • The Umbrella Academy
  • The Crown
  • The Stranger

For people looking for something more intriguing, it will interest you to know that Netflix also produces feature films, including documentaries and comedy specials. With shows like El Camino, Breaking Bad, and Martin Scorcese’s The Irishman, receiving excellent ratings, Netflix originals will keep you longing for more.

However, with the coming of streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix no longer enjoys its status as the holy grail of original programming. And this isn’t surprising because Amazon Prime Video also features top tier originals that will keep you glued to your screens. With shows like Jack Ryan, The Boys, Patriot, The Man in the High Castle, The Expanse, Bosch, Good Omens, Fleabag, and Undone featuring Amazon Prime Video catalog, you’ll enjoy a swell time watching some of the best Hollywood releases.

Although Hulu may be famous for its remarkable broadcast television lineup, you can’t take it away from them that their originals are superb. With original productions like Castle Rock, Harlots, Veronica Mars, Casual, and Catch 22 listed on their catalog, Hulu is not ready to bow to the competition.

Similarly, other streaming platforms like Apple TV+ and Disney+ are looking to join the mix as they plan on releasing tons of original content. And with shows like Mankind and The Mandalorian already airing, you’ll agree that they mean business.

Even the likes of CBS All Access don’t want to be caught by surprise as they boast of some original shows, including Why Women Kill, The Good Fight, Star Trek: Picard, The Twilight Zone, and Star Trek: Discovery.

In a bid to outdo the competition, Netflix is now building itself to become the go-to source for streaming anime. Here, check out a list of their brilliant anime shows;

  • Inu Yasha
  • Rabotech
  • Rurouni Kenshin
  • Little Witch academia
  • Voltron
  • She-Ra
  • Castlevania

The trouble most anime lovers have with some of Netflix Anime collections is that their shows come and go. This minute they are available, the next minute you can no longer find them, which is annoying.

However, if you’re pretty down for mind-blowing anime shows, we will suggest you check out Crunchyroll as they offer a brilliant collection of anime titles. Hulu also has anime lovers covered as they boast of having over 400 classic anime shows.

Netflix plans, pricing, and platforms

Netflix isn’t the cheapest option when it comes to streaming services, so you should be considering other options if cheap is what you’re looking for. That said, Netflix is famous for increasing the pricing of its three plans over time.

Their basic plan, which is the cheapest, starts at $8.99 and grants you access to Netflix content library. However, you can only stream in SD on a single screen.

If you want a better quality stream, you’ll want to go for their middle-tier plan that costs $12.99 per month. With this plan, you can stream all of Netflix’s content library in HD, plus, you can stream on two screens simultaneously.

For large families or group of friends looking to share their Netflix account, their premium plan that cost $15.99 per month will suffice. With this fantastic plan, you can stream all Netflix content in HD. More so, you can stream on four devices at a time.

Netflix Ad-free policy

There are many things we love about Netflix, but one we are intrigued about is that their contents are ad-free. Besides its preview feature, which is available for its in-house content across Netflix apps, you’ll enjoy an ad-free stream every time you hit the playback button. And thankfully, you can now disable Netflix preview feature, so nothing is standing between you and your favorite shows.

Thanks to Netflix’s ad-free stream, other streaming platforms are beginning to follow suit. Today, streaming services like Amazon Prime Video and HBO now let their users stream their favorite shows without ads popping up now and then.

With Hulu’s basic plan, you get to pay $5.99, but that comes with ads that can significantly impact your streaming experience. If you want something better, with little or no ads, you’ll have to upgrade to their $11.99 per month plan. On the Flipside, Amazon Prime Video offers a unique package that matches Netflix’s basic plan of $8.99 per month.

If you’re are out for something considerably cheap, then we suggest you try Disney+ or Apple TV as both streaming services cost $6.99 and $4.99 per month, respectively. The cool thing about Apple TV+ and Disney+ is that they both offer their customers simultaneous streams as well as providing support for 4K.

Other, less expensive options include AcornTV and BritBox. While AcornTV costs $5.99 per month, BritBox cost $6.99. With HBO now $14.99 per month, it is a tad cheaper than Netflix premium plan, which makes it perfect for people looking for a quality streaming service that is reasonably priced.

With Netflix’s pricing now close to the cost of some live TV services, many people are beginning to have a second thought. From Philo TV that costs $20 per month to Sling TV’s Orange and Blue plans that cost $30 a month, several live TV services will give Netflix a run for its money.

In addition to its intuitive web interface, Netflix boasts of powerful apps that work on both Android and iOS. Not just that, their apps also work on Amazon Fire Stick, Roku, Apple TV, and game consoles. They also have a desktop app you can easily download from the Microsoft Store and install on windows 10.

The Beginnings of Netflix DVD on-demand service

For newbies, you may not be aware that Netflix started as a DVD-by mail service, and even now, this service is very much available. Although it is a separate subscription from their streaming service, you can get hooked to this service by visiting dvd.netflix.com to add this service to your Netflix account.

Like their streaming service, Netflix DVD on-demand service features a couple of plans that will interest you. Their basic package starts at $7.99 a month. With this plan, you’ll get one disc at a time together with unlimited DVDs per month. One thing you’ll love about this plan is that you’ll not be charged late fees, plus, shipping and returns are free.

Netflix premium DVD plans start at $11.99-per-month. The difference between this plan and their standard plan is that this plan lets you have two discs at a time. For those interested in HD Blu-ray, you’ll have to pay $9.99 and $14.99 for their standard and premier plans, respectively.

The main reason to explore Netflix’s DVD-by-mail service is that it expands Netflix content library. So when you don’t find a content you’d like to stream, Netflix DVD on-demand will not disappoint you. That said, it will be wise to double-check and confirm if you can buy or rent the same content via iTunes, Amazon, Microsoft, or game consoles. This way, you wouldn’t have to wait for an envelope to land before you can watch a show or movie.

On the flip side, DVD nerds who want to watch Netflix DVD on-demand on their smartphones will have to use the DVD Netflix app. It is a dedicated app that works for both Android and iOS. With this app, you can keep up with incoming and outgoing shipments.

Netflix website interface

Netflix features a signature look that differentiates it from other streaming platforms. From dark background to large media thumbnails to white text and more, Netflix has an intuitive web interface that looks elegant right from the get-go.

What we love about their web interface is that it is easy to navigate from one section to the next, and you don’t have to be tech-savvy to come up to speed. Featuring five menu options, including Home, Recently Added, Movies, TV Shows, and My List, it’s pretty easy to navigate the Netflix web interface.

On the upper right-hand corner of your screen, Netflix includes a search bar that allows you to search for your favorite shows and movies. That’s not all; they also include My Account option that lets you manage profiles, access Netflix help center, and tweak account settings.

The unique thing with the Netflix account setting option is that it offers features and unique customization you’ll not get with other video streaming platforms. Netflix also lets users explore recently viewed movies and shows along with streaming activities as regards devices used and when.

To put things simply, we did not encounter any performance issues when streaming Netflix via its web interface. With other streaming platforms, you’ll experience a couple of performance issues.

Netflix Home tab is where all the significant activities happen. From Popular on Netflix to New Releases to Trending Now, the Netflix Home tab boasts of having recent content that will keep you glued to your screens all day long. With the Netflix Home tab, you don’t have to spend hours looking for the perfect show or movie to watch; their Trending Now list section is an excellent place to kick off.

Moving your mouse over any Netflix content will trigger a video preview. We know that a lot of users find this annoying, but it’s just Netflix’s way of ensuring that you don’t miss out on anything. Thankfully, you can turn off video preview, so it isn’t a deal-breaker.

To get more detailed information about a movie or show, all you have to do is click on an entry, and you’ll find all the information you’re looking for, including synopsis, genre, and percentage recommendation based on your stream history.

With Netflix, the power is in your hand as you’re allowed to give content thumbs up or down. On top of that, Netflix will enable you to add content to My List section; this way, you can save shows and movies you’d like to watch later.

Finding a movie or show on Netflix has to be one of the easiest things to do. By providing options that allow users to sort shows and movies by genre, recommendations, alphabetical order, and year of release, Netflix ensures you find a video or show that will have you hooked all day.

More so, finding Netflix originals isn’t such a difficult thing to do, simply scroll down to one of their horizontally scrolling sections, and you’ll find all of Netflix Originals in one place.

Considering Netflix’s changing library, it will be super fantastic if the company can provide information on how long a particular content will be available, along with an option that lets you add reminders so you can keep up with the expiration date.

Netflix mobile app

Netflix has one of the best mobile apps in the streaming industry, and we had no issue installing or using the Netflix app on Android devices. While we haven’t tried it on iOS, we doubt if there is any significant difference. From a first glance, the Netflix app looks and performs like the web interface; plus, it is pretty easy to navigate.

Just like their web interface, the Netflix mobile app features five sets of menu icons that are uniquely located at the bottom of the screen: Home, Extras, Search, Downloads, and More. On the Netflix iPhone app, you also get the same features you’ll find on the Netflix Android app. Although there are a couple of navigation changes between the Netflix Android app and its iPhone counterparts, these changes are insignificant. For Example, the Netflix app for iOS is missing the Extras options at the bottom of the menu bar.

Downloading via the Netflix app

Netflix, like most on-demand video streaming platforms, now let their users download their favorite shows and movies for offline viewing. Their download tab provides you with everything you have selected for offline viewing; the only thing that is missing here is that there is no search function. So if Netflix can include this in their future updates, that will be great.

Internet speed for download and streaming

You’ll require a decent internet speed to stream and download content on Netflix. According to Netflix, you’ll need a minimum of 0.5 Mbps per second to stream titles without hassles. For streaming DVD quality, you’ll need a reliable high-speed internet with 3 Mbps. If you are interested in streaming HD, then you’ll require a 5.0 Mbps internet speed.

While testing download speed over a high-speed internet, we discovered that it took a little over a minute to download a 50 minutes episode of our favorite show in high quality.

Please keep in mind that Netflix downloads don’t last as long as you want; we wish it does. With Netflix download, some titles expire after 48 hours, while others can only be downloaded a certain number of times. In future updates, we would love to see Netflix do something about these limitations.

As the Netflix web interface, the Netflix mobile app also features a sleek Home tab that allows users to sort content by movies or TV shows while having unlimited access to My List entries. With the Netflix app Extras section, you can see previews of popular content based on your streaming history. On the flip side, the more tab features all the vital app settings including Netflix download feature which is essential for binge streaming

Thanks to their smart download feature, the minute you finish streaming a downloaded episode, Netflix deletes that episode and proceeds to download the next episode automatically. While testing this feature, we were impressed because it worked as advertised. More so, this section also lets you tweak network preferences while managing profiles.

Complaint about Netflix

There are many things to love about Netflix, but guess what, there are also some things you’ll hate about Netflix. Read on, and we will highlight some of them in a bit.

Outdated library

One of the issues that many users have complained about is that Netflix’s library isn’t up to date. Besides their Original titles which can be considered timely and trendy, other movies and shows are updated late. But this isn’t entirely their fault especially considering licensing agreements with networks.

Limited regional selections – Netflix With A VPN

With Netflix, you get to see contents that are available within your location. What this means is that you may not be able to enjoy the contents that are available to people living in the UK or Canada. Thankfully, this can be fixed if you use a VPN to stream.

Using a VPN is cheap and simple and by simply switching from your local services to the EU, Latin America and even Australian or Canadian server you get the benefits of watching regionally restricted content and its only one click away and costs nothing, except for the price of a VPN which is about $3.50 per month.
