What is Sprint OMADM โ€“ Everything You Need To Know

Device management can be described as the management of device configuration together with other managed objects in the devices from the viewpoint of the management authorities.

Sprint OMADM specs

Device management consists of but is not limited to setting preliminary configuration information in devices, information updates, information management recovery and processing events and alarms generated by devices.

It also allows service providers, network operators, or corporate information management departments to carry out the procedures of configuring devices on behalf of the customer or the end-user.

What Is OMADM?

OMADM or simply put OMA Device Management (DM) is a protocol designed for device management through the shared engagement of functioning groups of the Device Management, Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), and the Data Synchronization (DS). Within the OMA-DM protocol, communication is established together with the server through HTTPS.

This makes use of is the most updated version of OMA-DM v1.2.1, in the form of the message payload. The latest modification and specification was released in June 2008, and till now, it has become the most accepted and approved version of OMA-DM =1.2.1.

What Are The OMADM Specifications

In 2003, the specification for OMA DM was developed and released for PDAs, mobile phones, and tablets. The designed was specifically for constrained devices that their bandwidths are limited, but works with M2M communication over a range of protocols like WAP, HTTP, or SMS. This can be applied to devices to do any of the following;

Support provisioning โ€“ย Any device should automatically register itself together with the metadata whenever it is added to a new system. Whenever this registration is done, the system provides identity and credential for it.

Configurationย โ€“ Device management (DM) services normally support the direct application of new configurations or by broadcasting new configurations for a bulk update. In addition, it also manages any dependencies within the configuration.

Firmware updatesย โ€“ This encompasses the importance of installing new and updated software together with bugs to be sorted out. This includes application and system software.

Fault management โ€“Keeping track of device logs and metadata is also another responsibility for device management services. For instance, a service might track firmware version, device capabilities, the usual location of the device, device status and ID. This information is often exposed by device management services, together with connectivity logs and error through dashboards or APIs to use for remote debugging. The status and logs can also be used to generate alerts, for instance, if the device has not given out any data for a certain period of time.

Authentication โ€“ Authentication services helps in establishing the identity of the devices. The device makes use of the created identity during the provisioning process. This ensures that whenever there is an external communication with other apps, devices, or services, the other party will rest assured that the device is from a trusted and authentic source.

How OMDM Functions

Once there is a firm communication establishment between the client and the server, a series of messages begins to conduct and then exchange for the given task assigned by the device manager. However, OMA-DM can direct few messages alerts out of the sequence, but later, this gets initiated by either client or server.

The essence of these alerting messages is to fix bugs, handle errors, or any abnormal termination.
Before the start of the session, quite a few parameters directly related to the communication are negotiated between the server and the client. This takes place within maximum messages.

Next, a large object of instructions is being sent into minute chunks by the OMA-DM protocol. There is a difference within the several operations as a result of the non-specification of the since error recovery timeouts.
Furthermore, as the session progresses, several packages which are made up of some messages are being exchanged.

Each message comprises of various commands. The server then initiates the command; the client implements those commands and then provides the result through a reply message.

What Is Sprint OMADM?

Sprint OMADM is a newly designed modem which is over the provisioning enabled and also an internet-based modem. The OMA-DM provisioned device gets functional immediately a respected modem has been duly registered within the Sprint network.

This is because the new OMA-DM is precisely network-oriented. Once the registration has been completed, the modem will be able to carry out a hands-Free Activation.

Itโ€™s important to remember that as the activation is still in sequence, no direct command(s) should be sent to the modem. By this, I mean, resetting or powering the modem. These actions are better done once the sequence of activation has been dully completed.

How to Activate Sprint for OMA-DM?

First, you need to contact the Sprint customer service representative to set up your account. This information should be made available before then;
Your billing address

The Mobile Equipment Identification (MEID) of your modem. This can be seen on the modemโ€™s label.
The contacted Sprint representative will assist you in selecting your service plan and then provide you with the following information

  • Your Service Programming code ( SPC)
  • Your device Mobile ID Number (MIN or MSID)
  • Your device phone number (MDN)
  • IN CONCLUSION

Device management (DM) services help to automate the management of Sprint devices as long as the lifecycle last. This includes; authentication, configuration, provisioning, monitoring, maintenance operations, and eventually decommissioning. In other words, to get an interoperable Sprint solution, device management is a critical component for it.
