A good Internet provider in the market should be able to provide reliable Internet services, Bundle packages, and multiple speed options all at a competitive price. The best overall has all the mentioned qualities and additional unique features that set it apart from the competitors.
The internet has become a necessary utility for our Businesses and even homes. It can be quite daunting, especially when there are many competitors with similar prices and Internet plans. For that reason, we are here today to help you discern between AT&T and Frontier Internet.
AT&T is an American Internet service provider headquartered in Whitacre Tower in Downtown Dallas, Texas. AT&T is actually among the largest Telecommunication Companies and the largest provider of mobile telephone services. AT&T began as a Southwestern Bell Company, which was a subsidiary of Bell Telephone Company in 1877. The company has, over the years, changed to adjust to the dynamic market.
Today, AT&T offers wired Broadband Internet through the DSL and Fiber Networks in the US. It’s currently known to have the most robust network footprints in Texas, Florida, California, and 19 other states.
Frontier is an American Telecommunication Company that primarily served the rural areas and small communities. The company was previously known as Citizens Utilities Company up to 2000 and later changed to Citizens Communications Company until 2008.
Frontier offers telephone services, Digital Television, and broadband internet. The company is the 11th largest pay Television provider in the US, with more than 838,000 subscribers. Though it recently filed for bankruptcy.
Frontier has wide coverage in the country, but many of its coverage areas are not densely populated. AT&T, on the other hand, has relatively wide coverage, and luckily, the company has the most substantial presence in some of the most populated areas. This is what puts AT&T ahead of Frontier in this category.
Frontier Internet Special Features
Frontier has theoretically the same unique features with AT&T. What this means is that it has over 400 digital channel streaming to the TV and HD video streaming over the network, Mobile Hotspots for easy access, 1Gbps speeds in some plans, and lastly, private Internet connection.
Theoretically, all of these features are available, but practically they are mainly covered by their cable connections. This means that those using Satellite Internet are very unlikely to load all the data functions because of their slow Bandwidth. These features also vary by location, and unless you are in the appropriate area, you may miss out on some unique features.
Frontier Pros and cons
- Availability in the Rural areas
- Many Plan options
- High-speed Fiber-Optic Options
- Price lock-in for two years
- No contracts
- Relatively high prices
- The connectivity is slow
- Poor customer service
AT&T special features
AT&T and Frontier have the same features. The difference comes in how the features are made available. Frontier offers more speed options, but the top tier is more expensive than the 1Gbps plan from AT&T. Besides the speeds, there are many other features that you will get with AT&T.
- VIP deals on dining and Movie tickets
- Call block, call return, and call forwarding
- Can set Mobile Hotspots
- Fast and reliable long-distance calling
- Connectivity to Multiple devices.
- Inexpensive and High-speed Internet plans
- Amazing features
- Fast internet in the cities
- The ability to add unlimited data for $30 per month
- Relatively better customer service
- Limited coverage in rural areas
- Few options to choose from
- The customer service is spotty and unresponsive to the customer needs
These two companies offer Bundle packages with different combinations of Phone, TV, and Internet. Bundling can really save you a lot of money. In terms of Bundling options, AT&T takes the win for its plethora of options and better reviews. This doesn’t mean Frontier is a slouch because it offers such services in rural areas.
Many of you have heard that AT&T and Frontier are competitors, but we all have little information about these two companies, and we would probably make a wrong decision when choosing. Given that these two companies can be available to you, you probably want to compare and contrast them in different categories. What are their service types? Differences in plans and services, Customer service reliability, and overall score? Which between these two companies is the best match for your Business and residential home?
All of these questions will be answered here. Let’s start with the service type for the two companies.
What is Frontier FiOS?
This is a high-speed fiber optic network that provides landline access, Limited TV service, and Internet access. The service tends to have slightly lower pricing than most competitors, even those that offer Bundled TV, Internet, and Phone. You are likely to pay just $40 for the internet with 50Mbps for the basic Frontier Fios plan. The basic plan will contain landline and pricing guaranteed for a period of two years. New users also get a signup bonus of the $100 Visa Reward Card and a full year subscription to Amazon Prime. This provides a handful of streaming TV shows and movies, but you are likely to miss out on the traditional access to Live TV channels.
Alternatively, you can go for Frontier FiOS Triple Play Bundle at the cost of $75 per month. You have 50Mbps for the internet and a signup Bonus just as the basic package. The most important thing is that you will get access to 130+ channels of TV through the Frontier’s Quantum TV service.
The only challenge in this package is that there is a possibility of experiencing slow internet speeds, but I like the fact that there are no monthly Bandwidth limits. You might also have to incur some extra costs for premium channels with the Quantum TV service because it’s akin to DirecTV.
It’s also wise for serious surfers to consider the Triple Play 500/500 plan, where you’ll get 500Mbps internet speeds and TV selections with a less advanced Play plan. But you will have to surrender $95 every month for the service. Frontier proves to be a reliable Internet service provider, but the price for the high tier options is very high, and you are likely to get a lot of add-ons that you probably don’t need.
What is AT&T TV and Internet?
Now that you have a much clear understanding of what Frontier FiOS is and some of the options you have let’s move on quickly to AT&T TV and Internet options. This is the new way of Bundling TV and Internet service. The included TV service with this is U-Verse TV live TV service and the new AT&T on-demand Network. For AT&T internet users, it’s easy to access the AT&T TV service if it’s available to you in your area.
The reason why AT&T packages are popular is mainly because of the TV access. The entire AT&T plan includes Multiple TV services, each being extensive in terms of the content. But the main weakness in this regard is that it doesn’t have Budget-friendly options. The cheapest Internet and TV Bundle from AT&T costs $75 with 100Mbps internet and over 190 channels of Live TV. The challenge is that the signup Bonus for this package is not very enticing. In this regard, you will only get your Installation fees waived.
AT&T provides you with all the equipment you want for the installation, including the HD DVR, Modem, and router. This is a perfect option for people starting and don’t have the financial muscles to set up the infrastructure.
In this regard, the next option costs $95 per month and has the same speeds as the less expensive one. You will have the option to bundle your cell phone with TV and the Internet. The only challenge is that the signup bonus is paltry, and you will end up paying your Installation fees, which is very expensive.
Main Internet Plans and Prices
AT&T has eight DSL and three fiber optic internet plans. This gives the customers plenty of choices and a chance to choose the speed and price that matches their needs. When it comes to performance, AT&T ranks well. But its reliability is highly dependent on the service type that is available to you. AT&T had a latency of 33ms, which is nearly close to the 34ms average among the ISPs. This means that if you enjoy multiplayer gaming, this will give you the best experience or close to it.
AT&T also had a 0.4% packet loss, which FCC takes as a highly desired level of performance. This also means that if you participate in video meetings for work or Videoconferences, you cannot lose connections or even have sound cut-outs.
All the plans from AT&T come with a year contract, but it can be longer for Bundle packages. The company also introduces a 1TB data cap for almost all plans. This is one of the downsides and a blow for heavy internet users. If you surpass the data cap, you will be required to pay an additional $10 for an additional 50 GB of data. The maximum overage charge is $100 for the internet and $200 for DSL in a month. The best option, in this situation, is to pay $30 for an unlimited data allowance. There are also additional fees for activation, installation, and equipment rental. Here are the available Internet plans and prices.
|AT&T Internet plans||Download speed||Upload speed||Data cap||Price per month|
|Internet 1000||500-940Mbps||500-940Mbps||No cap||$70|
Frontier, on the other hand, has 3 DSL and 6 Fiber Optic internet plans. This is one thing these two ISPs have in common. Luckily, Frontier also has a couple of plans with symmetrical download and upload speeds. This means that you will get the same upload speeds if you pay for 50 Mbps download speeds. This is a nice feature, especially for Freelancers and Developers.
Some of the plans have a two-year price guarantee. Others also have a promotional price for a set amount of time. After that, the price will automatically increase. Some plans have yearly contracts, and others don’t have any contracts. Aside from that, you might have to pay other fees like the Installation fees and equipment rental fees. Before getting into any contract, ask about all the terms and conditions. Here are the plans and prices as of the time of writing this review.
|Frontier Internet Plan||Price/Month||Download speed||Data cap|
|Simply FiOS 50/50||$29.99*||50 Mbps||Unlimited|
|Simply FiOS 500/500||$39.99†||500 Mbps||Unlimited|
|Simply FiOS Gig Service||$74.99‡||1000 Mbps||Unlimited|
Checking the plans and prices from these two companies, AT&T is very likely to win for the number of options. However, Frontier has some cheap options perfect for budget shoppers. The 1Gbps plan from the two companies is reliable, but the price varies. AT&T’s 1Gig plan is more affordable and reliable, a reason why AT&T is perfect for heavy internet users or home-based Businesses.
What are the Internet Speeds
These two companies are very close to the category of Internet speeds, plans, and prices. AT&T and Frontier both have fiber internet that can go up to 1,000Mbps. The two also have DSL internet, which is widely available to customers around the country.
Delving deeper, the two companies also have Fiber and DSL internet plans with top Internet speeds. For that reason, neither of them stands out over the other in terms of Internet speeds.
Cost, Data, and Value for Money
When it comes to Monthly costs, Frontier knocks AT&T off the head. The Frontier base plans are basically twice as cheap as the AT&T options. However, when you get to the higher-tiered Internet plans, AT&T has more reasonable offers, but the gap gets a little smaller. Generally, when it comes to affordability, Frontier wins.
Installation fees and other fees
It’s very common with ISPs to charge Installation fees, and Frontier and AT&T are not an exception. The installation fees can be a considerable cost for someone, especially those on a budget. Luckily, Frontier has a self-installation option, which is not the case with AT&T. This means that you can choose to buy your own equipment and install the internet and other utilities. Besides the fact that AT&T doesn’t offer self-installation options, they extend the offer to free installation deals to most, if not all, of the new customers.
The people who already have their own equipment that is compatible with the provider can avoid the company’s rental charges. But if you need to use AT&T equipment, you will have to pay monthly rental equipment fees. AT&T actually has the least equipment rental fees in the market.
Are you a power user wondering what would happen if you exceed the data caps? If yes, then Frontier doesn’t impose any caps on their Internet plans. This means that while you are gaming, you shouldn’t worry about your internet suddenly being throttled right before you score.
Its only one AT&T plan that comes with unlimited data access. All the other options below AT&T’s gig plan have data caps. Luckily, users can separately upgrade to unlimited internet-only options with AT&T.
The only deals you can expect from these two companies are giveaways, low introductory prices, free installation, and many more. You shouldn’t expect unreasonable offers and coupons from the companies.
The truth is its quite difficult for internet service providers to score highly in customer service. Well, if you’re wondering why then you’re not alone. People have always wondered what it would take for these ISPs to listen to their customers and serve them well. With that said, AT&T doesn’t seem to be doing that badly in customer service. As a matter of fact, it ranks quite well in customer service. The 2019 ACSI (American Customer Satisfaction Index) report gave AT&T a score of 69/100. If you asked me, this is a fairly good score compared to others but still a bit low. We believe AT&T can improve on this and do better.
Frontier, on the other hand, requires a whole lot of improvement in its customer service. From the look of it, the frontier customers are not satisfied with the services they are getting. This should explain why the company only managed to score 55/100 marks in the ACSI report. It ranks way below the others and doesn’t even come close to its counterpart AT&T. Therefore, if customer service is of importance to you, AT&T is less likely to frustrate you.
Similar providers in the market
If you feel that neither Frontier nor AT&T is good for you, here are other service providers that might cut it.
Comcast Xfinity is not an unfamiliar internet service provider in the US. It’s actually among the best ISPs, and there is a good reason behind it; it has coverage almost across all states in the US. On that note, if you’re looking for a reputable ISP with super-fast internet speeds, Xfinity is an excellent option.
There are some juicy deals that you can get from Verizon FiOS if it’s available in your area. For starters, you will enjoy fast and symmetrical internet speeds. Secondly, there are no contracts.
Do you prefer staying in metropolitan areas? If yes, then RCN is the best ISP for you. Its service area is majorly in the metropolitans. The internet speeds are excellent, and its plans are quite affordable.
Who has the best Internet Service?
AT&T and Frontier have good services when it comes to Internet provision. However, AT&T is well known for its Customer Service, while Frontier is known for the best and the most affordable Internet plans. So, choose wisely.
Who is better, AT&T or Frontier?
Frontier is relatively better for Internet plans, speeds, and affordability. However, when we talk about customer service and Bundle packages, AT&T takes first place.
Is AT&T cheaper than Frontier?
Frontier Internet plans vary in speed and price, starting from $27.99, which is the cheapest. On the other hand, AT&T internet plans start from $50 per month. So, if you compare the two companies’ low-speed Budget plans, Frontier has the best plans for Budget users. But AT&T Gig plan is cheaper than the Frontier Gig Plan.
Who has faster speeds, AT&T, or Frontier?
These two companies offer the same speeds. They have Internet speeds of up to 1,000Mbps. The cheapest plan from Frontier is 6Mbps, while the slowest Internet plan from AT&T is 10Mbps. The prices vary, and there are issues with the actual/advertised Internet speeds for both companies.
Overall: Who is the winner?
The winner will depend on what you are looking for in an internet provider. If you want excellent customer service, AT&T wins pants down. The best bundle services will also come from AT&T. Besides the fact that AT&T is doing well in many categories, heavy Internet users would obviously choose Frontier FiOS because of the many options available and lack of data caps. You will not necessarily have to ration your Internet usage for fear of hitting the limit. Frontier TV offerings are not so strong, and this is where AT&T beats the company. When you sign up for Frontier services, you will get a $100 gift card regardless of the plan you’ll pick.
AT&T TV options seem stronger simply because you can access more than one TV service regardless of the option you will pick. For people that want to Bundle Internet with TV and Phone services, AT&T has some good options. But remember, AT&T has data caps that are followed by high spillover fees.
